SUMMERTIME

Can I just say...I love staying at home with my girls...and hate even the thought of going back to work :-)

A Visit at Lisa's

I mentioned in the previous post that my girls spent a week at my sisters, but I also stayed a week up there when I went to pick the girls up. Lisa's church was having VBS, so I signed the girls up there as well.

We had a lot of fun. Delaney only lasted one day at VBS, when she decided that being around too many new people was not her cup of tea. So each day, we drove Jacob, Emily and Kaytlynn off at church for 3 hours and then Lisa and I shopped and ran errands with Delaney and Grace.

Something else we did was each day we watched a different American Girl movie. I don't know if you are familiar with these, but each one is a story of a fictional character during sometime in American history. Julia Roberts is the executive producer of them and they are really well done! We watched Felicity (1775 during the Revolution), Samantha (1904 during child labor abuse and women were fighting for their rights as well), Kit (1933, the Great Depression) and Molly (1943 WWII). ALL FIVE kids ages 4 -10, both male and female LOVED these little movies...so if you are looking for good, clean, family entertainment...there ya go!

One night we went to see my dad's garden. He was so happy. He had filled it with carrots, onions, peppers, corn, many different squashes, pumpkins, green beans, and tomatoes. I am sure I am missing something, but that is the gist. The kids got to pick peppers and green beans and then we went home and showed the kids how to snap them. The kids just loved it!

Thursday evening we spent the day at my parents house and celebrated Fathers Day a little early. We had Ribeye, potatoes, and corn on the cob....Practically a perfect dinner.

Friday night, Lisa's church had a family day to cap off VBS. They had about 10 different moonwalk activities (some were mazes, others had water slides, and one was a Laser Tag game) They had bungee jump activities, rock walls to climb, petting zoo complete with a ring tailed Lemur, and Pony rides. They also had popcorn, sno cones, etc. for everyone to enjoy. The weather was perfect and the kids had a ball. The petting zoo was their favorite part because they got to watch a goat poop...go figure. All of that entertainment, and they sit there and stare at a goats behind while it poops. My niece even tried to "wipe" the darn thing with grass, until we screamed DON"T!!!! Quite embarrassing and funny all the same!

We left on Sat. Got stuck in traffic. Bad accident less than a mile ahead of us (Thank you God that we weren't hurt). It took more than an hour of not moving, before they could clear the road. The girls were so antsy that I treated them to dinner at the Collin Street Bakery. If you aren't familiar with the Collin Street Bakery...look them up. They have been there forever and make delicious cookies (though they are known for their fruitcakes). We got home just before 11:00...one hour before Father's Day!

It was a great visit and we wished that we could have stayed.

Again...Thank you Lisa for being such an amazing sister.

The Girls Went Away

My parents came for a visit one weekend. When they did, my sister suggested that I send the girls back to Denton while I spend my last week at work. I didn't know how well it would go, but said yes, thinking that in the worst case scenario, we could just meet half-way and go get them.

My sister and I used to spend about 2 weeks each summer at my Aunt Barbara's and Memaw's (my mom's mom). We loved every minute of it. I never go homesick. Now that I am older, I realize that that isn't always the case. Kids can't sleep or whatever if they aren't home in their bed. Well, lets just say...my kids didn't miss me one DING DANG BIT!

I would call each night to check on them (and because I was missing them like crazy). I would ask each time...are you ready to come home. Each time the answer was NO MA'AM! It was kinda funny actually. Todd didn't like it too much, because he missed them more than I did. But the truth is, we were both working that week, so we only missed seeing them awake for about 3 hours a day.

They really did have a ball with their cousins. They played down by the creek at Lisa's house, they jump roped, played freeze tag, went to a jump and crawl space joint called Going Bonkers. They watched movies, made cookies and just had loads of fun. I'm glad they are back but I am so glad they got to go. Thank you, Lisa, for showing my girls such a good time and for loving them so much.

Delaney's Bosses

Delaney has quite a few bosses. I know because she told me.

I was asking her to do something and she just sort of "ignored" me. She doesn't dare say no to me, but quite often just sort of walks off.

Well, I get all snooty on her and ask...Delaney, who are you supposed to listen to? She quite bluntly says "God". Good one, Delaney.

Daddy overhears what is going on and says "who else?" She...again very bluntly, and perhaps, even a little louder exclaims, "Jesus".

Todd..."AND...."

Delaney..."the Howy Spiwit".

And who else?

She squints her eyes, pouts her lips, and sadly says..."and you guys".

Wow...all of that, and she has never even seen a parochial school.

I say again...Kids say the darnedest things!!!

Easter 2009

So, a few posts back I griped about Kaytlynn's choice of clothing for her school pic. She really did look CUTE, but tell me that this is not CUTER!!! So Sweet, So Innocent, So Frilly and LITTLE GIRLISH!!! Easter gives you the excuse to slap all the raw silk, bows, flowers, crenoline slips, and hair buns on that your heart desires. Mine still like it right now, but when they grow up a little more and don't...I won't care. They will forgive me when they are moms. At least, I think they will.

The girls woke up early of course, so that they could scope out what the ole Easter Bunny had brought them. Kaytlynn received a Barbie magnet dress up set, a High School Musical key chain that sings, and a microphone for her Karaoke machine.

Delaney received magnet dress up sets that were focused on all the Disney Princess.

Both girls received "make your own" body shimmer kits and tons of candy.

We went to church and then watched it rain all day. At church we got our pic in front of the cross. I talked Todd into doing this before Sunday school rather than after, reminding him of the usual wait. Thank goodness he did, because about 20 minutes after the pic was taken, one of the worst storms I have ever seen, came blowing through...

The members of the church are given the opportunity to put a fresh flower on the church. It always ends up looking beautiful!

Again...thank you God for my new STURDY roof!!! :-)

Kaytlynn Finally Got Ears

Hanging out by the fountains after Kaytlynn getting her ears pierced.
She asked us to take about a million pics of her new "ears".

Right after the job was done...not a tear in her eye! I didn't plan it...but I don't think I could have picked a better outfit to have her wear in the store!
The 2 ladies that did the piercing.

Daddy wanted to take a before shot.

Kaytlynn and Delaney trying to pick their Daddy up.

The Crenshaw's with their little orphan.

The Northrup family at Annie. That is our neighbor Orphan Peyton right in the middle.

Our girls with Miss Hannigan.

We went to see our neighbor, Peyton Crenshaw, in the Christian Youth Theatre production of Annie Jr. It was terrific. Peyton was one of Ms. Hannigan's orphans. The music, dancing and acting was all terrific!

Afterwards, we went to Market Street and took Kaytlynn to Sweet and Sassy to get her ears pierced. She has been "sort of" wanting to do this since last year. She would end up changing her mind after we would explain that it would be like a super quick pinch and then it would be over.

About 3 weeks ago, the family went to Sam Moon for hair bows. While there, Kaytlynn admired every pair of earrings she saw. She said right then and there that she wanted her ears pierced and this past weekend was our first opportunity to do it.

She chose her earrings. They are small amethyst flower petals with the center being a white cubic zirconia. She got right in the chair, the 2 ladies talked her through what they were going to do, and as soon as they pierced her ears, instead of any tears, there was a HUGE smile on her face. She was so excited! We paid for it, and as we were leaving the store she exclaimed, "I am so glad that I finally got ears!"

She has spent every moment possible admiring herself and her earrings in the mirror. Every once in a while, she will even say that she wants us to take another picture of her ears!!! She is such a little cutie!

As a side note, Delaney did NOT want her ears done. She told me she would get it done when she was maybe 30. She finally decided that she would do it when she was 8!

Porter Nursing Home...

I had a strange memory a couple of days ago and decided to blog it so that I wouldn't forget it.

When I was young...think age 5 -8 we lived about 4 miles from a nursing home. It was a small one and quite sad. It looked like the old hospitals...white walls, no decor, etc. My mother used to got there a couple of times a month and volunteer to cut hair there. They had this little closet of a room that had a hair dryer, beauty sink, etc. My mom never cut hair for a living...she just could do the basics.

It taught me a few things:

1. Its sad to see lonely people. Most people rarely or never had vistors and they would try to get you to sit and talk to them so that they could tell you their life story.

2. Old people become children again. There was this lady named Zety and Zetty liked to feel dressed up. She was always seen with a hat on her head (usually a cheap hotel type shower cap :-) and lots and lots of cheap sparkly beads around her neck (think 99 cent store). She looked like a kid that got lost in her mothers closet playing dress up!

There was also another lady that carried a baby doll with her wherever she went.

3. It will amaze you what some people can do with yarn! There was this really crafty lady that would sell little rabbits made of yarn (she made lots of other stuff too.) I remember that I wanted one and didn't get it, but my mom had actually bought one for me for Easter. I still have it and it makes me smile everytime I see it.

4. Old people love to be sung too. You'll never see them smile a bigger smile.

5. Old people think its good to see little kids running around being kids, but they think it is even better when those kids show up on Halloween with their costume on passing out candy!
If you really want to make their day...see number 4 above and do it with your costume on.

6. Making peoples day makes your day.

So if you are wondering if there is something you can do that is service oriented with your kids...find a nursing home and think of something simple you can do. I plan on doing something this summer with my girls at that same nursing home I went to.
